Yeast Infections -  Home Remedies and Natural Cures

Yeast Infections - Home Remedies and Natural Cures

Yeast infections are not truly caused by yeasts. Perhaps the most common cause is an organism known as Candida albicans, which is a yeastlike fungus.

An infection caused by this organism is properly known as candidiasis.

Candida albicans is frequently found on the skin or mucous membranes of perfectly healthy people. It rarely becomes an infectious agent until some predisposing factor is present. But then, even when the fungus is eradicated by medication, it often returns unless that underlying environmental or metabolic factor is normalized.

Causes & Symptoms

The main symptoms of yeast infections are:

  • Itch
  • Burning sensation
  • A white discharge like cottage cheese
  • Fishy smell.

Diabetes is one such predisposing factor, but far more frequently, candidiasis erupts in the wake of antibiotic therapy.

Excessive sweating or moisture may also invite infection, and the wearing of pantyhose is believed to create highly favorable conditions for a vaginal infection.

Small cracks or other injuries of the skin also invite trouble. Vitamin deficiencies, notably of the B complex, may also be responsible for infections which are difficult to eradicate.

Natural Cures Recommendations

Soak panties in hot water for 30 minutes before washing them and make sure they are rinsed thoroughly.  They can be touched up with a hot iron.

Avoid frequent douching, bubble baths, feminine sprays, scented tampons and colored toilet paper because these products may disturb the normal vaginal pH balance. Use unscented sanitary pads during menstruation.

Avoid tight-fitting clothing such as polyester, Lycra spandex and leather because does not allow a good air circulation in the vaginal area. Avoid, in addition, panty hose because they are too restrictive in the vaginal area.  Cotton underwear is recommended.

Avoid prolonged wear of a wet bathing suit or damp undergarments, change into a dry outfit.

Wipe from the front to the rear after a bowel movement or urination.

Avoid sugars such as candy, cakes or anything with refined, white or powdered sugar because it can cause chronic yeast infections.  Instead, use brown sugar or honey.

Avoid refined carbohydrates such as bread, mushrooms and alcoholic beverages.

Eat plenty of foods that are high in vitamin C such as potatoes, citrus fruits and broccoli which help provide systemic and local immune enhancement. If immunity is down, a yeast infection can appear.

Avoid vaginal sexual intercourse during course of treatment
