Definition

varicose veins

Due to blood congestion, the veins becomeenlarged, dilated, and tortuous.  This condition is known as varicose veins or varicosities.

Varicose veins can occur in any part of the body but they are seen most often in the legs.

The superficial veins are most often affected when this condition has developed.  However, varicosities can also develop in the deep veins. Varicose in the superficial veins are called primary varicosities, while in the deep veins are called secondary varicosities.

Natural Cures Recommendations

Do exercises that increase the circulation in the legs such as swimming and walking.

Get up and walk around every half an hour when you areon a long plane or train trip.

Avoid massage strongly and directly on the varicoseveins.

Elevate your feet and rest your legs on a chair orstool when you are reading or watching television.

Avoid standing for long periods (or sit too long oftime) because this will reduce pressure on the valves in the veins in yourlegs. However, if you have to stand too long, shift your weight from one leg to the other, get up on tiptoe or rotate your feet clockwise or/and slide your heels back and forth.  Do these exercises twenty times, relax for a few minutes and then repeat.

Never cross your legs. This will enhance the problem.

Sleep with feet raised above the level of the heart.

Wear support stockings which compress the veins and keepthem from stretching and limit pain.

Eating a balanced diet (especially rich in vitamin C) andkeeping your weight down

Avoid potatoes, starchy foods, condiments, alcohol, coffee, strong tea, white flour products and white sugar.

Wear tennis shoes. If your feet habitually swell, itmay be worthwhile to wear tennis shoes or other lace-up shoes that can beopened up or loosened to alleviate the pressure and allow for freer circulation.

Stay away from tight pants or other clothing.
