Avoid smoke. If you have chronic throat irritation, avoid smoke and do not exposure yourself or your children to breath secondhand smoke

Use a humidifier in your house or bedroom especially during the cold winter months.  The dryness of heated indoor air may cause you to open your mouth while sleeping which leave your throat irritated.

Increase your fluid intake in order to help hydrate your throat tissues.  However, you might want to avoid acid juices like orange juice, which can irritate the throat and coffee that have a counterproductive diuretic effect.

Buy a new toothbrush.  If you have a chronic sore throat, it is recommendable to replace your brush every three weeks because bacteria collect on it can cause this problem and consider also storing it outside the moist bathroom atmosphere.

Avoid the stomach acid.  If your sore throat is due to backup of stomach acids, you can avoid this problem by tilting your bed frame so the head is 4 inches higher than the foot.   In addition, do not eat or drink for an three hours before sleeping.

In order to prevent a sore throat, it is important to:

  • Wash hands with warm water and soap frequently.
  • Maintain an adequate sleep and nutrition balance.
  • Avoid close contact with someone who has a sore throat.
